  1. =1 Help: Comprehensive Search

  4. Entering a search term in the Comprehensive Search Field will result
  5. in a search being performed on all fields of the database
  6. simultaneously, retrieving all records contain- ing the specified
  7. search term.  It is useful for finding all references to a specific
  8. term, or in searching for obscure terms.  For a more refined search,
  9. use one of the following search fields, where the search is confined
  10. to the contents of that particular field.

  14. You can access commands on the command line by pressing the Function
  15. (F1..F10) key associated with the command, or by pressing \4TAB\0 and using
  16. the \4\x1A\0 and \4\x1B\0 keys to highlight a command.  Execute the command by
  17. pressing \4\x11─┘\0.

  19. The command line options are:
  20.  
  21. \4 Help \0        On-line help.
  22. \4 Browse \0      List all the indexed words and fields.
  23. \4 Display \0     Display the found documents.
  24. \4 Query \0       Change the logical connections between search
  25.               fields and enables you to load, save or clear
  26.               search criteria.
  27. \4 Options \0     Change parameters and defaults for CD Answer.
  28. \4 Quit \0        Go back to the Main Menu.

  30. To search for a document, enter your search criteria into one of
  31. the search fields and then press \4\x11─┘\0.  You can use the
  32. following operators when you enter search criteria:
  33.  
  34. \4 AND (+) \0        The search terms must occur together in the
  35.                  field for a match.
  36. \4 OR (,) \0         Either one or the other or both of the
  37.                  search terms must occur in the field for a match.
  38. \4 NOT (#) \0        Use NOT to locate all documents that do not
  39.                  contain the search term.  You can also use NOT
  40.                  with AND and OR, for example BOSTON AND NOT
  41.                  BROOKLINE.
  42. \4 WITHOUT \0        This is the same as AND NOT.
  43. \4 ADJ x \0          The search terms must occur within x words
  44.                  of on another for a match.  x is a number.  For
  45.                  example THIS ADJ5 THAT will find all documents
  46.                  in which the word THIS appears within 5 words of
  47.                  the word THAT.  It is order dependent.
  48. \4 SAME \0           The search terms must occur in the same
  49.                  field for a match.
  50. \4 SAMEs \0          The search terms must occur in the same
  51.                  sentence.
  52. \4 NEAR x \0         The search terms must occur within x terms
  53.                  of one another in the field, but the order is
  54.                  irrelevant.
  55. \4 NEARS x \0        The search terms must occur within x
  56.                  sentences of each other but the order is
  57.                  irrelevant.
  58. \4 * \0              Use the asterisk to replace any number of
  59.                  characters in the search term with a wildcard,
  60.                  for example SMITH* or *BURG.  You can include
  61.                  only two asterisks per search term.
  62. \4 ? \0              Use the question mark to replace one
  63.                  character in the search term, for example SM?TH.
  64.                  You can include as many occurrences as you want.
  65. \4 LIKE term \0      Searches for term using the phonetic index.
  66.                  For example, LIKE Mayer searches for Meier,
  67.                  Mayer and Meyer.
  68. \4 < x \0            Searches for less than x.
  69. \4 > x \0            Searches for greater than x.
  70. \4 <= x \0           Searches for less than or equal to x.
  71. \4 >= x \0           Searches for greater than or equal to x.
  72. \4 x TO y \0         Searches for the range from x to y, inclusive.
  73. \4 x .. y \0         Searches for the range from x to y, inclusive.
  74. \4 <> x \0           Searches for not equal to x.
  75. \4 NONE \0           Searches for all documents for which this
  76.                  field is empty.
  77. \4 ALL \0            Searches for all documents that contain data
  78.                  in this field.

  80. Double quotation marks surrounding a search term disable
  81. recognition of logical operators (for example "AND" searches for
  82. the word AND).  In addition, double quotes instruct CD Answer to
  83. look in the line index (if one exists) before looking in the word index.

  86. Name of the organisation that manufactures the hardware.  Addresses
  87. and contact information are included in the Companies Database.  It
  88. is possible to search on any word or combination of words from a 
  89. company name.
